WYSE Students Excel in Competition

On March 17th, students from both Woodstock High School and Woodstock North High School participated in the Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE) Sectional Competition at Vernon Hills High School, where they faced some of the toughest competition in the state. One WYSE team member from Woodstock High School, Senior Spencer Hanson, advanced to Sectional competition, where he earned 3rd place in Physics.  From Woodstock North High School, the team advanced to Sectionals, where they earned 5th place.  In individual State Finals competition, WNHS students took first place in two categories, plus a second and third place State award!  See “Read more” below for details on these outstanding students.

WNHS team members are: Madison Boyce, Zachary Emricson, Braeden Given, Ryan Hanson, Jacob Kaspryk, Dylan Martinez, Alyssa Massman, Jeffrey Massman, Jonathan McCoy, Emma McElmeel, Alec Molve, Samantha Nowakowski, William Taylor, Justin Wesolek and Hannah Wilson.

From this group of competitors, Ryan Hanson, Alyssa Massman, Emma McElmeel and William Taylor advanced to the State Competition, which was held at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign on April 20th.  The students performed exceptionally well, earning two first place finishes, one second place, and one third, as follows:

  • Alyssa Massman, 1st Place in Biology
  • William Taylor, 1st Place in Engineering Graphics
  • Ryan Hanson, 2nd Place in Computer Science and 3rd Place in Math

WNHS Coach Jillian Barry said of her students, “They did a fantastic job, earning our school's first ever first place finishes at the state level.  As a result of earning 1st or 2nd place, all three students have earned scholarships ($2,000 for 1st place and $1,000 for 2nd place) to U of I's College of Engineering.  Of the hundreds of students that have competed at Regionals, Sectionals, and State this year our students scored the top scores in the state for two out of the seven categories.  They did a fantastic job representing District 200 and Woodstock North!”

Congratulations to these outstanding students and to WYSE Coaches Pete Hansen (WHS), and Jillian Barry (WNHS).  The students were honored by the Board of Education at its May 2nd meeting.
