Course Description
Topics studied in Driver Education include rules, regulations, and procedures of driving, perception and communication, defensive driving, motorcycle, bicycle, and pedestrian safety, driving in adverse conditions, emergency procedures, individual physical and emotional problems, the effects of alcohol and drugs on a driver, insurance, and total driving responsibilities. Successful completion of this course is required for graduation. Driver Education is a one-quarter class and students are automatically enrolled in Personal Fitness for the next quarter.
Course Objectives
- Apply traffic laws and the Rules of the Road to various roadway situations and conditions.
- Develop the essential decision making skills for safe operation of a motor vehicle.
- Describe general performance capabilities of motor vehicles as well as physical and natural factors that affect vehicle control systems.
- Describe the legal and moral responsibilities for a person involved in a traffic crash situation, the financial responsibility law, and minimum insurance coverage.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the D.U.I. laws to ensure students make appropriate decisions in regard to the use of alcohol and other drugs before operating or riding in a motor vehicle.
- Develop the knowledge to perform basic maneuvers of a motor vehicle in multiple driving conditions.
- Develop an understanding of basic car care.
Absences and Tardies
The driver education classroom is structured to meet the requirements established by the State of Illinois and the Illinois State Board of Education. It is mandated that you receive 30 clock hours of instruction to pass the course. Therefore, if you miss more than SIX classes for ANY REASON during the first quarter, you will be dropped from the class with a grade of “F” and assigned to study hall.
